Civil Engineering has recently seen enormous progress in the core field of the construction of deep foundations. This book is the result of the International Workshop on Recent Advances in Deep Foundations (IWDPF07), which was held in Yokosuka, Japan from the 1st to the 2nd of February, 2007. Topics under discussion in this book include recent research achievements and case histories; and current advances in the applied aspects of deep foundations, such as reliability-based design, field tests and experimental field work. The book also features the latest numerical simulation methods and theoretical findings. There are nine keynote lectures, focusing on foundation engineering in different parts of the world, and thirty-three state-of-the-art papers from eminent international experts. The techniques covered include sheet piles, piles, pile-ground improvement and ground improvement, while dynamic aspects and design are also discussed.. This book is intended for an international audience of researchers and professionals in soil and foundation engineering.
X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) scanning has been widely used for medical diagnosis. This technique is now attracting increasing interest as a tool in non-destructive testing in engineering. This book reports the early results of research into this application, with particular reference to deformation and failure of geomaterials. Presenting papers of the International Workshop on X-CT for Geomaterials at Kumamoto, Japan in 2003. The book is intended for researchers and professionals in the fields of geotechnical engineering, soil, rock and concrete engineering, and geology.
Earth reinforcing techniques are increasingly becoming a useful, powerful and economical solution to various problems encountered in geotechnical engineering practice. Expansion of the experiences and knowledge in this area has succeeded in developing new techniques and their applications to geotechnical engineering problems. In order to discuss the latest experiences and knowledge, and with the purpose of spreading them all over the world for further development, the IS Kyushi conference series on the subject of earth reinforcement have been held in Fukuoka, Japan, every four years since 1988. This fourth symposium, entitled "Landmarks in Earth Reinforcement", is a continuation of the series IS Kyushu conferences, and also aims at being one of the landmarks in the progress of modern earth reinforcement practice. The first volume contains 137 papers selected for the symposium covering almost every aspect of earth reinforcement. The second volume contains texts of the special and keynote lectures.
This book brings together a total of 48 contributions (including 5 keynote papers) which were presented at the 2nd International Workshop on the Application of X-ray CT for Geomaterials (GeoX 2006) held in Aussois, France, on 4-7 October, 2006. The contributions cover a wide range of topics, from fundamental characterization of material behavior to applications in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. Recent advances of X-ray technology, hardware and software are also discussed. As such, this will be valuable reading for anyone interested in the application of X-ray CT to geomaterials from both fundamental and applied perspectives.
This book is the first of its kind in focusing on the enforcement of corporate and securities laws, both public and private, a relatively understudied but critically important issue for the development and health of global capital markets. The book has a special focus on the young system coming into being in the People's Republic of China (PRC), but also examines the enforcement of corporate and securities laws across the globe and across different legal and political systems from an in-depth comparative perspective. This single volume assembles a veritable 'dream team' of contributors who are amongst the very best scholars and legal specialists in the many national jurisdictions covered in the book. Hence, it is of significant value to corporate and securities regulators, judicial officials, prosecutors, litigation specialists, corporate counsel, legal and economic policymakers, scholars, think tanks, students, and investors alike.

The contributions cover computer methods, material m
Geomechanics II: Testing, Modeling, and Simulation presents research gathered by investigators from Japan and the United States, covering various geomechanics issues such as experimentation, constitutive modeling, and numerical simulations. This proceedings contains 37 papers presented at the Second Japan-U.S. Workshop on Testing, Modeling, and Simulation in Geomechanics, held in Kyoto, Japan from September 8-10, 2005. It presents current relevant research activities on a variety of topics for the purpose of sharing knowledge to foster and build cooperative efforts between two countries.
