An exploration of the most complex microbial ecosystems with incisive reviews of developments in soil science. It presents techniques of chemical analysis, refinements of environmental protection measures, and methods for maximizing agricultural yields. It also addresses a wide range of biochemical processes and practical applications of advanced biotechnologies.
Civil Engineering has recently seen enormous progress in the core field of the construction of deep foundations. This book is the result of the International Workshop on Recent Advances in Deep Foundations (IWDPF07), which was held in Yokosuka, Japan from the 1st to the 2nd of February, 2007. Topics under discussion in this book include recent research achievements and case histories; and current advances in the applied aspects of deep foundations, such as reliability-based design, field tests and experimental field work. The book also features the latest numerical simulation methods and theoretical findings. There are nine keynote lectures, focusing on foundation engineering in different parts of the world, and thirty-three state-of-the-art papers from eminent international experts. The techniques covered include sheet piles, piles, pile-ground improvement and ground improvement, while dynamic aspects and design are also discussed.. This book is intended for an international audience of researchers and professionals in soil and foundation engineering.
First published in 1997, this book contains six in-depth articles on various aspects of the field of tight and taut submanifolds and concludes with an extensive bibliography of the entire field. The book is dedicated to the memory of Nicolaas H. Kuiper; the first paper is an unfinished but insightful survey of the field of tight immersions and maps written by Kuiper himself. Other papers by leading researchers in the field treat topics such as the smooth and polyhedral portions of the theory of tight immersions, taut, Dupin and isoparametric submanifolds of Euclidean space, taut submanifolds of arbitrary complete Riemannian manifolds, and real hypersurfaces in complex space forms with special curvature properties. Taken together these articles provide a comprehensive survey of the field and point toward several directions for future research.
This volume is a compilation of papers presented at the conference on differential geometry, in particular, minimal surfaces, real hypersurfaces of a non-flat complex space form, submanifolds of symmetric spaces and curve theory. It also contains new results or brief surveys in these areas. This volume provides fundamental knowledge to readers (such as differential geometers) who are interested in the theory of real hypersurfaces in a non-flat complex space form. Contents:Homogeneous Submanifolds and Homogeneous Curves in Space Forms (S Maeda)Injectivity Property of Regular Curves and a Sphere Theorem (O Kobayashi)A Family of Complete Minimal Surfaces of Finite Total Curvature with Two Ends ...
This work collates the topics discussed in the sixth International Conference on land and offshore piling. It covers topics such as: wave mechanics and its application to pile mechanics; driving equipment and developments; and pile integrity and low strain dynamic testing.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Computer Vision Systems, ICVS 2008, held in Santorini, Greece, May 12-15, 2008. The 23 revised papers presented together with 30 poster presentations and 2 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 128 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on cognitive vision, monitor and surveillance, computer vision architectures, calibration and registration object recognition and tracking, learning, human machine interaction as well as cross modal systems.
This book on the molecular gearings of fission yeast is cordially dedicated to Carsten Bresch, Michi Egel-Mitani, Herbert Gutz, Paul Nurse, Amar Klar, and Urs Leupold. With these candid personalities - all influential to the casting of my pro fessional and private career - I had the good fortune of sharing coauthorship at very significant steps towards developing a sensible touch for the subtle charm of this wonderful model organism (Bresch et al. 1968; Egel and Egel-Mitani 1974; Egel and Gutz 1981; Beach et al. 1982; Egel et al. 1984; Leupold et al. 1989). As to the timing of the book, repeated queries from participants at our Copenha gen EMBO courses on Molecular Genetics with the Fiss...
Advances in Transportation Geotechnics II deals with the geotechnics of roads, railways and airfields. Providing economic and sustainable transportation infrastructures for societies is highly dependent on progress made in this field. These contributions to the 2nd International Conference on Transportation Geotechnics (Hokkaido, Japan, 10-12 Septe
